Surprise, AZ
Gary Lee Woods, 81, of Surprise, Arizona, passed away peacefully on May 31, 2026. Born on July 6, 1944, in Junction City, Kansas, Gary lived a life filled with heart, humor, and a genuine love for the people around him. He had a way of lighting up a room, and his presence made others feel welcome, seen, and cared for.
In 1961, Gary proudly joined the United States Army. He began his service as a paratrooper and, after moving to Germany, served as the Colonel’s driver, showing the steady courage and commitment that shaped who he was.
Once he returned home, Gary devoted himself to a career built on loyalty and hard work. He spent 20 years with Revco, where he also served proudly as a Reserve Deputy for the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Department, before finding his second home at Victory Lane Sports Complex. He went on to work there for 24 years, retiring in 2022.Whether lending a hand, sharing a laugh, or quietly taking care of the little things, Gary approached each day with a kind, selfless, and big hearted presence that touched everyone around him.
Gary had a gift for finding joy in the things he loved most. He was a true car show lover, happiest when admiring classic cars or swapping stories with fellow enthusiasts. He enjoyed the fun and excitement of casinos and never turned down a good game of Bingo. But nothing brought him more happiness than time spent with his family. He was the steady presence and the comforting laugh that brought his family together. To his family, he was simply the best father, grandfather, and great grandfather they could have asked for.
Gary is survived by his sister Patricia Bush; daughter Rhonda Hulsebus (Jerry); son Gary Woods II (Amanda); grandchildren Demi, Halen, Noah W., Noah K., Emma, and Terra; and great grandchildren Aubrey and Nash. He was preceded in death by his parents Martha and Theodore Woods and his brother Theodore “Ted” Woods.
To those who knew him, Gary will always be remembered for the way he made people feel — valued, supported, and loved. His legacy is one of kindness, laughter, and generosity, a reflection of the remarkable man he was.
A Celebration of Life will be held on June 27, 2026, at 12:00 PM at Victory Lane Sports Complex, 22603 N 43rd Ave. Glendale, AZ. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to Hospice of the Valley or Lura Turner Homes, organizations that reflect the compassion and care Gary believed in.
